When deciding to see the Big Island from an aerial view, a visitor has a few choices. Helicopter tour or zipline. I think there is parasailing too. There has been recent buzz from adrenaline junkies in the form of those who chose ziplining. I had seen the zipline on the Today Show and was intrigued. I’m a confessed roller coaster aficionado so ziplining offered an incredible point of view of the Big Island. Ziplining lets a person enjoy the ride and the view with no long roller coaster lines. Why not get the most value and the prettiest view for your money?
Hawaii is known for breathtaking waterfalls and lush green scenery. The Big Island’s Umauma Falls zipline offers exceptional views including the famous triple-tiered Umauma Falls. It takes anywhere from one and a half to three hours to explore nearly 2 miles of spectacular zipping through paradise, enjoying canyon and ocean views. There are other zip tour operators, but Umauma is easily the best. It is a thrill, it is fun, and it is a feast for the eyes and soul plus there is enough challenge for those who have checked out other zipline courses. Many ziplines are now available in Hawaii. Be aware that some zipline tours show a waterfall in the picture but you usually don't actually zip near what the picture shows. We were glad that we chose Umauma since it’s the only one that goes over waterfalls and not pastures like the other zips in the immediate area. Some of the others on our tour said "this is the best zipline in all the Hawaiian Islands." We all agreed that the Umauma people and customer service - from beginning to end - was top-notch. Our tour guides were definitely knowledgeable, competent and inspired confidence in the group regardless of athletic background. We especially enjoyed the tandem line! Maybe you’re ready to enjoy the view and meet the challenge? Here are some common Q&A re: zips:
What is ziplining? Ziplining is an exhilarating way to see the beauty of the Umauma River from a truly unique aerial perspective. Originally developed to allow biologists to observe the natural world high in the formerly inaccessible treetops, ziplines are steel wire cables that extend between tree trunks or cliff faces. Participants are securely strapped into a harness, which is utilized to slide down one of these cables at an angle of descent that allows riders to reach speeds upwards of thirty miles per hour. The longest cables at The Umauma Experience extend to more than twenty-two hundred feet.
How long does it take? The tour generally last somewhere between one and a half to three hours. The tour length varies for each outing. Combination adventures can last longer. Instruction and travel time can add some additional time.
Is it safe? Ziplining is a safe activity. The extensively trained tour guides ensure that all participants are properly outfitted with the latest safety gear, including helmets and harnesses. The equipment is top-of-the-line and meticulously inspected and maintained. The guides are first-aid-certified and have hundreds of hours of safety training under their belt.
Can anyone go on ziplines? There are some weight and age restrictions. For weight there is a minimum of 80 pounds maximum 260 pounds and you must be at least ten years old.
Does the tour run rain or shine? Yes. And there are rain shelters at each platform for the comfort of the guests
